These paragraphs in tro duce a more complete, compact w a y of
do cumen ting subsystems using a tabular format. The command
table con tains more information than just the command hierarch y
sho wn in a graphical tree. In particular, these tables list command
parameters for eac h command and resp onse data formats for queries.
T o b egin this exploration of command tables, consider a simplied
SWEep subsystem for the sw ept signal generator in b oth the graphical
and tabular formats.

Reading the Command T able
Note the three columns in the command table lab eled Command ,
Par ameters , and Par ameter T yp e . Commands closest to the ro ot
lev el are at the top of the table. Commands in square brac k ets
are implied commands, whic h are discussed in later paragraphs.
If a command requires one or more parameters in addition to the
k eyw ord, the parameter names are listed adjacen t to the command.
P arameters in square brac k ets are optional parameters, whic h are
discussed in later paragraphs. If the parameter is not in square
brac k ets, it is required and y ou m ust send a v alid setting for it with
