Standard Notation
This section uses sev eral forms of notation that ha v e sp ecic
meaning.
Command Mnemonics
Many commands ha v e b oth a long and a short form, and y ou m ust
use either one or the other (SCPI do es not accept a com bination
of the t w o). Consider the FREQuency command, for example. The
short form is FREQ and the long form is FREQUENCY (this notation
style is a shorthand to do cumen t b oth the long and short form of
commands). SCPI is not case sensitive, so fREquEnCy is just as v alid
as FREQUENCY , but FREQ and FREQUENCY are the only v alid forms of
the FREQuency command.
Angle Brack ets
Angle brac k ets indicate that the w ord or w ords enclosed represen t
something other than themselv es. F or example, <new line>
represen ts the ASCI I c haracter with the decimal v alue 10. Similarly ,
<^END> means that EOI is asserted on the GPIB in terface. W ords
in angle brac k ets ha v e m uc h more rigidly dened meaning than
w ords used in ordinary text. F or example, this section uses the w ord
\message" to talk ab out messages generally . But the brac k eted w ords
<program message> indicate a precisely dened elemen t of SCPI.

<program message> in a syn tax diagram.
Ho w to Use Examples
It is imp ortant to understand that programming with SCPI
actually requires kno wledge of t w o languages. Y ou m ust kno w
the programming language of y our con troller (BASIC, C, P ascal)
as w ell as the language of y our instrumen t (SCPI). The seman tic
requiremen ts of y our con troller's language determine ho w the SCPI
commands and resp onses are handled in y our application.
Command Examples
Command examples lo ok like this:
:FREQuency:CW?
This example tells y ou to put the string :FREQuency:CW? in the
output statement appropriate to y our application programming
language. If y ou encoun ter problems, study the details of ho w the
output statement handles message terminators suc h as <new line> .
If y ou are using simple OUTPUT statements in HP BASIC, this is
taken care of for y ou. In HP BASIC, y ou t yp e:
OUTPUT Source;":FREQuency:CW?"
Command examples do not sho w message terminators b ecause
they are used at the end of ev ery program message. \Details of
