Using Detector
Calibration
Detector calibration is useful for c haracterizing and comp ensating for
negative dio de detectors used in external lev eling. Detectors may b e
c haracterized b y three op erating regions as sho wn in Figure 1-12: the
square law, the linear, and the transition region. The following steps
use an HP/Agilent 437B to automatically c haracterize the op erating
regions and use this information to automatically comp ensate for
the detector b eing used. The equipmen t setup sho wn in Figure 1-22
assumes that the steps necessary to correctly externally lev el ha v e
b een follow ed.

1. Connect the p o w er meter as sho wn.
2. Zero and calibrate the p o w er meter/sensor.
3. En ter the appropriate p o w er sensor calibration factors in to the
p o w er meter.
4. Enable the p o w er meter/sensor cal factor array . F or op erating
information on the HP/Agilent 437B p o w er meter, refer to its
op erating and service man ual.
5. Connect the p o w er sensor to the output of the coupler
(or splitter).
6. On the sw ept signal generator, set the p o w er lev el and start/stop
frequency information as desired.
7. Press 4 USER CAL 5.
