Quarter-cut technique
CAUTION: While a number of factors can affect
the felling control and direction of large or
double-cut trees, uncontrolled felling can create
a hazardous situation. To reduce the risk of this
occurring, ensure you use work site planning and
management methods when felling such trees.
The quarter-cut technique is used to obtain better
felling-control.
Make a saw-cut, placed at the base of the tree, in the
fell-direction approximately 1/4 of the tree’s diameter.
Then, move the felling head to the back of the tree, ready
for falling.
CAUTION: To minimise the risk of injury during
felling, ensure you always work on one tree at a
time and ensure you complete the tree cut.
Ensure the back cut (2) is placed higher in the tree than
the quarter cut (1), and ensure both cuts are parallel to
achieve a hinge effect. This will prevent loss of control
during felling.
In some cases, several quarter cuts will prevent the tree
from snapping off too soon. You can use this method in
any situation where you require greater felling control,
such as with large butt flares, heavy leaners, badly swept

butts, or multi-leaders. A higher level of control will
minimise the risk of damage to the tree and/or the carrier.
Log loading
While the FL85’s arms are optimised for felling,
shovel-logging, and bucking, you can also use it for
loading.
To perform loading tasks:
1. Open the grapple arms and pick up the appropriate
logs.
2. Swing and wrist the felling head to the desired location
(wood pile or truck).
3. To unload the log or bunch, release the grapple arms
while tilting the head forward.
Shovel-logging
To perform shovel-logging, first pick up the tree or bunch.
If the trees are of average size, swing and wrist the felling
head to the desired location.
If you are working with larger trees, using the wrist to
facilitate the swing-cycle, swing and wrist the felling head
to the desired location.
Bucking
To carry out bucking:
1. Use the grapple arms to lift the tree from the ground at
the desired position.
2. Activate the saw bar.
3. Repeat at desired intervals along the tree.
