Hillside felling
If you are felling trees on a hillside, it may mean the cutting
unit is exposed to dirt/duff on the uphill side of the tree(s).
Ensure the head is positioned correctly (5), so the tip of
the saw bar does not ‘foul’ the ground on the high side of
the tree.
Unattended felling head
IMPORTANT: If you lay the felling head and link
mechanism in such a way that the rotator
comes into contact with the head, you may
seriously damage the rotator motor.
If you leave the felling head unattended, leave it in the
upright or tilt-up position, so that it points away from the
operators’ cab with the boom stretched right out.

Main-saw process
Before using the main-saw, you should keep in mind:
1. How easily you can view the saw bar.
2. When the saw chain is activated, the head will fall over.
3. How the boom hydraulics and the cab are protected.
4. How the tree is positioned for extraction.
5. When cutting, push the tree in the required direction
while avoiding upward pressure.
6. As the saw unit completes a cut, the speed of the saw
motor will increase, and bark chips may be visible.
7. The saw will return automatically once you complete a
cut and stop activating the saw button.
8. You can jam the saw during felling. In this instance,
stop the activation of the saw and slowly lift the head.
As the weight of the tree will pressurise the oil in the
carrier’s lift rams, the lifting distance should not be
great.
9. Check the “saw home” indicated to ensure that saw
has returned before moving the tree too far.
10. Ensure the log is clamped before the saw chain is
activated. A loose log may move after the saw chain
begins the cut, which may derail the chain or stop
it from cutting.
11. A side tear along a tree may prevent the saw chain
from returning if it is not cut on the downward pass;
you should make the cut past this tear.
12. You can avoid ‘log split’ by supporting the log during
cutting.
13. As the saw chain completes a cut, you may need to
engage a small amount of upward lift in order to keep
the cut open and to avoid chain stall.
14. When completing a cut, take care to ensure the end
of the saw bar does not cut into the ground. The saw
chain may cut into another log reducing the value of
that log or, if the felling head is moving, damaging the
saw bar and/or saw chain.
