Operational safety
IMPORTANT: The felling head can fall unpredictably
when the engine is shut down. In the event you
cannot restart the engine, lower the felling head
to the ground and release the trees from the
grapple arms before exiting the cab. DO NOT
exit the cab and approach the felling head until
the felling head is lowered to the ground and any
trapped hydraulic pressure has been released.
When starting an operation in a new location determine
the work zone.
Choose an agreed working procedure among the team
working with the felling head: DO NOT change this
procedure without further discussion.
Before each period of operation, ensure all safety
equipment, instruments, and controls have been checked
for functionality, to ensure they are working correctly.
During operation, ensure you keep all windows and doors
closed.
If someone enters the safety zone, safely stop the felling
head immediately.
Ensure no-one stands in the cutting direction of the saw
chain. The chain shot hazard zone is approximately 15
degrees towards the rear of the sprocket and in front of
the bar-tip. Keep all personnel 90 meters (300 feet) away
from the felling head during tree felling operations.
Ensure the work zone is completely clear of all personnel
before felling a tree or processing a stem.
While local safety regulations may vary, check with the
local authorities to ensure you adhere to all local safety
regulations.
Anticipate a safety zone of at least 5 meters (16 feet)
between power lines and the nearest point of contact of
the felling head.
When working in a restricted area, check for interference
with cylinder rods, hydraulic hoses, electrical cables, etc.
Always lower the felling head and its load to the ground;
leaving a load suspended may result in injury or death.
Passing a load over another vehicle, even if it appears
empty, may cause injury to someone out of the operator's
line of sight.
IMPORTANT: Use caution when manoeuvring the
felling head close to the carrier; failing to
do so may result in damage to the carrier
and/or felling head.
Always allow enough distance between the stem and the
felling head cab.
When removing a log from a stack, avoid making sudden
movements, which could cause damage to the head when
shifting or moving stacked logs. Such movements may
damage the felling head and can be costly in terms of
parts and down-time. This may also constitute a potential
source of injury.
When working at night, ensure the work area is
adequately lit. Use a recognised safety light with a wire
cage-protected bulb.
Inspect the felling head daily for any signs of damage,
unusual wear, fatigue cracks, or faulty operation.
Inspect the condition of the saw chain and saw bar for signs
of excessive wear or damage daily; perform such checks
immediately after hitting a rock or other foreign material.
