This can be achieved by dropping down a gear and reducing speed as
you approach the slope.
Using low gears throughout the descent will reduce the strain on the
tow car's brakes.
For automatics you may need to manually change to a lower gear ratio
in anticipation of the effect on the outfit due to the change of gradient.
Stopping on a hill:
Starting on a steep gradient may bring its own difficulties. Remember
that the overrun brakes are not working when stationary uphill because
the Caravan is tending to pull backwards. Chocks may be placed behind
the wheels to prevent running backwards.
On a very steep hill it will help the car if you allow the outfit to inch
slowly backwards until the caravan is at an angle to the car. The car
then has a better chance to gather up the full load of the Towing Home
gradually, and move off.
Don't forget to retrieve the Chocks.
Important Points Especially For Motorway Driving:
Caravans may not be towed in the out-side lane of a three or four lane
motorway.
Motorway driving requires extra alertness and an awareness of the
effects of other traffic and crosswinds on your outfit. Settle for a speed
at which your outfit and you feel comfortable.
