Similarly, it is not permitted to mix cross-ply and radial tyres on the same
axle. A redundant tyre must be replaced by one of the same size and
construction.
Wheels should be balanced and changed round occasionally to equal wear
and prolong the life of the tyres. A tyre should be renewed if a blister,
rupture or cut exposing the casing is detected. If the tyre has suffered a
violent impact e.g. against a kerb, it should be examined by a specialist as
soon as possible.
Whenever road wheels are removed and refitted, they must be tightened
using a calibrated Torque Wrench set to 65 lbs/ft for steel wheels (spare)
and 85 lbs/ft for alloy wheels.
Only use the wheel studs supplied with your Caravan.
Remember to over tighten is just as dangerous as to under-tighten, as this
can distort the wheel rims.
Avoid the use of power wrenches. Wheel studs should NEVER be lubricated.
Jacking/Changing a Wheel:
When raising the Caravan to change a tyre after a puncture or removing
wheels for winter storage you must use a suitable jack and not the corner
steadies. The jack should fit securely under the axle not the chassis member.
Single axle Caravans may be fitted with built – in jacking points on the
chassis. These jacking points are for use with the AL-KO 2T on Scissor Jack
which is available as an optional extra.
The jack you use can be either a bottle or small trolley jack but it must be
able to lift the MTPM of the Caravan.
