Chapter 7:
DRAINAGE SYSTEMS
7.1
General
All water is drained by gravity to overboard thru-hull fittings
located in the hull above the water line. It is important to
check the drain system frequently to insure it is free flowing
and that the hoses on the thru-hull fittings are secure and not
leaking.
7.2
Cockpit Drains
Your Scout has two scupper drains located in the rear of the
cockpit. A flap built into the scupper drain fitting reduces the
surge of sea water through the scupper and into the cockpit
while maneuvering or in rough water.
Water is channeled away from all hatches by a gutter or drain
rail system. The water then drains overboard through the scup-
per drain system or other thru-hull fittings in the transom.
A fitting in the drain rail for the center hatch on the Dorado
channels water to an overboard thru-hull-hull fitting in the
transom.
7.3
T-Top and Leaning Post Drains
(Optional)
There is a hole drilled in the rear leg bases on T-tops to pre-
vent water from being trapped within the legs and provide a
wire chase for accessories. A small hole is drilled in the tub-
ing at the base of the T-top and leaning post legs, which are
not drilled for a wire chase, also allows water to drain. Addi-
tional drain holes are drilled in the tubing to drain other areas
as required.
Always make sure the leg drain holes are clear when the boat
is laid up for the winter. Water trapped inside the legs could
freeze and cause the legs to split.
7.4
Bilge Drainage
The stern bilge pump is activated both manually, by a switch
in the helm switch panel and automatically, by a float switch
built into the pump. The automatic float switch remains acti-
vated when the battery switch is in the “OFF” position and
the batteries are connected. The bilge switch must be set to
“Auto” on the Sportfish and Abaco. All bilge pumps pump
water out of thru-hulls located above the waterline in the hull.
Note:
See Electrical Systems for additional information
on bilge pump operation.
When the boat is out of the water the bilge can be drained by
a drain located in the transom near the bottom of the hull.
The hull drain plug be opened and remain attached to the
transom for draining the bilge or completely removed. To
completely remove the plug, turn the plug counter clockwise
until it slides out from the transom slightly in the drain posi-
tion. Pull the plug away from the transom and continue turn-
ing it counter clockwise until the secondary threads release
the plug. The plug should be opened whenever the boat is
hauled out of the water and installed just prior to launching.
It is important to check the drain plug regularly to make sure
it is tight.
