Digital Wrench E-VES Learn Procedure:
• The E-VES learn procedure must be performed using Digital Wrench when the following occurs: EV actuator motor
is replaced, push / pull cable is replaced or disconnected from the tie bar, any exhaust valve (upper or lower) is
replaced, cylinder is replaced, or the E-VES valve assembly is moved to a different engine.
• The stand-alone battery required to perform the learn procedure must supply at least 11.5 volts. If battery voltage
drops below 11.5 volts, the procedure will stop and an error code / description will display on the screen.
• Do not connect two or more batteries in series. Voltage in excess of 15 volts will damage the EV actuator servo
motor.
• Perform the E-VES learn procedure after the engine is at operating temperature.
• The learn procedure erases the learned cable travel value. After erasing the travel value, the actuator motor moves
the valves to the stage 1 “home” position. When this occurs, the internal angle measurement is set to zero.
• The actuator motor then slowly moves the valves to the stage 3 full open position. The actuator motor records how
many degrees of travel from the home to full-up position. If the travel value falls into the allowed range, the learning
is confirmed and the angle is recorded in the actuator.
• If the travel angle does not fall into the allowable range, diagnostic code P1402 (Learn Failure) is generated.
• After the actuator motor performs an acceptable learn sequence, it cycles the valves in the following order: (stage 1,
stage 2, stage 3, stage 2, and then stage 1).
E-VES Maintenance:
• There is no periodic maintenance interval for inspection and / or valve cleaning for the E-VES system.
• E-VES guillotines are articulated via an electronic actuator motor via a push / pull cable. By eliminating the use of
cylinder pressure to actuate the valves, there are no cylinder or guillotine housing pressure ports that can become
obstructed with carbon or oil residue “fouling”.
• The E-VES actuator motor is designed to be capable of actuating the guillotines within the cylinder slots regardless
of blade condition.
• The actuator motor and ECU constantly monitor both the COMMANDED and the ACHIEVED position of the
guillotines. In the rare occurrence the guillotines are prevented from achieving a COMMANDED position, DTC
P1404 (Position not achieved) will be set along with one of the following DTCs: P140A (Valve up position out of
range), P140B (Valve mid position out of range), and P140C (Valve down position out of range). These codes are
more often set due to either inadvertent tampering with the actuator, push / pull cable, tie bar, or a mechanical issue
that is preventing desired guillotine travel, i.e., installing an E-VES assembly into a different cylinder without
performing the E-VES learn procedure. Performing the Push / Pull Cable Travel Test can be done to ensure the E-
VES system is functioning as designed.
