Chapter 6 - Creating Waypoints
Introducing waypoints
In this manual, the term
waypoint
refers to a point (a location)
that you’ve entered into the unit’s memory. The waypoint
appears on the chart with the symbol you’ve chosen.
The term
nav aid
refers to a point that’s permanently stored on
the Nav-Chart cartridge.
This chapter deals primarily with user-entered waypoints,
although many of the things you can do with waypoints you
can also do with nav aids.
Here are some things you can do with waypoints:
•
navigate to a point in one step (a “quick” waypoint)
•
enter waypoints into the unit’s memory for later use
•
navigate to these waypoints
•
string these waypoints together to form routes
•
follow these routes
•
edit or erase waypoints or routes
•
plot waypoints or routes
•
transfer all waypoints (and all routes) between any two
units, if connected properly
•
transfer waypoints (and routes) from the unit to a per-
sonal computer, and back again
Creating waypoints
New waypoints can be entered in two easy ways:
•
graphically--by entering their positions after pointing to
them on the
CHART
screen
•
numerically--by entering position coordinates as lat/lon,
loran TDs, or distance and bearing on the
NEW WAYPT
screen.
Assigning a name
and description
To store a waypoint permanently in the unit's memory, you
must assign it a
name
. The name can be from one to six char-
acters long, and must be different from all the other waypoint
