Chapter 3 - Using the Controls
POSITION function
key
The
function key is used to display your position on
the
CHART
screen to show your position graphically, relative
to nearby waypoints and your track history, or as lat/lon coor-
dinates on the
GPS POSITION
screen. COG and SOG are dis-
played at the bottom of the
GPS POSITION
screen and the
CHART
screen.
Position coordinates may be shown as any of the following:
•
on an electronic chart
•
as lat/lon using the GPS system
•
as lat/lon from an external loran receiver
•
as loran TDs from an external loran receiver
•
as Phantom Loran TDs that the unit calculates from its
GPS coordinates
STEER function key
The
function key shows how to steer to a waypoint
you’ve designated. A picture of your position relative to the
course line is displayed, along with all the numeric informa-
tion you need to steer directly to your waypoint. Two versions
of the steer display are available: traditional
STEERING
and
3D
STEER
. Press the
function key once to see the version
you last used. Press it again to see the alternate version. For
more information on using the steering screens, see ”Steering
to a waypoint” starting on page 118.
STAR function key
The
function key has several functions. The first key
press displays any alarms and messages the unit has waiting
for you. The second press displays graphic TideTrack informa-
tion about tides for your choice of over 3,000 NOAA tide sta-
tions. The third press displays the time of day, day and date,
and time of today’s sunrise and sunset. The fourth press dis-
plays a menu of setup and customization functions for use
when you want to change the way the unit works for you. For

”Using Other Special Functions,” starting on page 131.
