2 Front passenger airbag
3 Side im pact airbag
The m ost effective occupant re
straint system yet developed for
use in production vehicles is the
seat belt. In som e cases, however,
the protective effe ct of a seat belt
can be further enhanced by an
airbag.
The driver airbag is located in the
steering w heel hub. The passenger
airbag is located in the dashboard
ahead of the passenger.
The side im pact airbags are locat
ed in the front doors. In conjunction
with w earing the seat belts with
em ergency tensioning retractors,
the airbags can provide increased
protection for the driver and
passenger in certain m ajor frontal
(for front airbags) and side im pacts
(for side im pact airbags).
The operational readiness of the
airbag system is verified by the in
dicator lamp “S R S ” in the instru
m ent cluster. If no fault is detected,
the lam p will go out after a pproxi
m ately 4 seconds; after the lamp
goes out, the system continues to
m onitor the com ponents and
circuitry of the airbag system and
will indicate a m alfunction by
com ing on again.
The follow ing system com ponents
are m onitored or undergo a self
check: crash-sensor(s), airbag igni
tion circuits, fron t seat belt buckles,
e m ergency tensioning retractors,
seat sensor (when present).
Initially, w hen the electronic key is
turned from steering lock position 0
to positions 1 or 2, m alfunctions in
the crash -se nso r are detected and
indicated (the “S R S ” indicator lamp
stays on longer than 4 seconds). In
the operational m ode, after the
