Working with Internal Disk Drives

Replacing Internal Hot-Swap Drives

Drive problems include any malfunctions that delay, interrupt, or
prevent successful I/O activity between the hosts and the hard disk
drives in the expansion unit. This includes transmission problems
between the host controllers, the ESM board, and the drives. This
section explains how to replace a failed drive.

Attention:  Failure to replace drives in their correct bay might result

in loss of data.

Check the applicable hardware and software documentation
provided with your system to see if there are restrictions regarding
hard disk drive configurations. Some systems might not allow
mixing different drive capacities or types within an array.

Before you begin

Ÿ

Read “Handling Static-Sensitive Devices” on page 20.

Ÿ

Be sure to handle the drives carefully.

Ÿ

Determine the location of the drive that you want to remove.

1. Remove the drive. (For additional information and artwork

showing the removal and installation of drives, see “Installing
Additional Hot-Swap Drives” on page 42.)

a. Pull on the bottom of the drive latch to release the drive

lever.

b. Lift the drive lever and pull the drive partially out of the

bay.

c. Wait at least 20 seconds before fully removing the drive

from the expansion unit to allow for spin down. (Allowing
for spin down avoids possible damage to your drive.)

d. Verify that the drive is labeled correctly, then pull it out of

the expansion unit.

2. Install the new drive.

a. Pull up on the drive latch to open the drive lever and insert

the drive.
