3. Inspect the sprocket teeth for possible wear or
damage. Replace if necessary. Never use a new
drive chain on badly worn sprockets. Both chain and
sprockets must be in good condition, or the new
replacement chain or sprocket will wear rapidly.
4. Lubricate the drive chain (page 70).
5. Set the chain over the sprockets and join its ends
with the master link. For ease of assembly, hold the
chain ends against adjacent rear sprocket teeth
while inserting the master link. The master link is the
most critical part affecting drive chain security.
Master links are reusable, if they remain in excellent
condition, but a new retaining clip should be
installed whenever the drive chain is reassembled.
Install the retaining clip so that its closed end faces
the direction of forward wheel rotation.
6. Adjust the drive chain slack and rear brake pedal
free play.

Check the drive chain slider (1) for wear. Replace if the
slider is worn to the wear indicator line (2). For
replacement, see your Honda dealer.
