Review “Motorcycle Safety” (pages 6 to 10) before
you ride.

Make sure the side stand is completely up before
operating the motorcycle. If the side stand is
down, it may interfere with motorcycle control
when turning to the left. Refer to the Maintenance
Schedule (page 58) and Side Stand (page 72) for
proper operation.
1. After engine warm up, the motorcycle is ready for
riding.
2. While the engine is idling, pull in the clutch lever
and depress the gearshift pedal to shift into 1
st
(low)
gear.
3. Slowly release the clutch lever and at the same time
increase engine speed gradually by opening the
throttle. Coordination of the throttle and clutch lever
operation will assure a smooth positive start.
4. When the motorcycle attains a moderate speed,
close the throttle, pull in the clutch lever and shift
into 2
nd
gear by raising the gearshift pedal.
5. Repeat the same sequence to progressively shift
into 3
rd
, 4
th
and 5
th
gear.
6. Raise the gearshift pedal to shift into a higher gear
and depress it to shift into a lower gear. Each touch
on the gearshift pedal changes to the next gear, in
sequence. The pedal returns automatically to the
horizontal position when released.
Do not shift gears without pulling the clutch in and
closing the throttle. The engine and transmission
could be damaged.
