Model D2424LVmkII Reference Manual (Formatting and Optimizing Disks)
Formatting a backup medium (CompactFlash
TM
card or optional E-IDE hard disk drive)
You can format a backup medium (a CompactFlash
TM
card or optional E-IDE hard disk) in "24 bit backup" or
"16 bit backup" mode or in "DOS" format.
When a medium is DOS-formatted, FAT 16 or FAT 32 standard is automatically selected according to its
storage capacity (see the following for details about DOS formatting).
About FAT 32 format
When you use the D2424LVmkII to DOS-format a medium (CompactFlash
TM
card or optional E-IDE
hard disk) with the storage capacity between 530 MB and 320 GB, it is automatically formatted in
FAT 32 standard.
On the FAT 32 formatted medium, the "D2424LVmkII" folder is created in the root folder and some
folders are automatically created under the "D2424LVmkII" folder as shown below.
The WAV folder is used for storing WAV files, while the BACKUP folder is used for storing binary
data (DAT files) for backup of the FDMS-3 (Fostex Disk Management System-3). See page 94 for
details about saving/loading using a FAT 32 formatted medium.
<Note>:
The D2424LVmkII can use up to 320 GB disk space. Therefore, if you DOS-format a hard
disk drive of more than 320 GB capacity using the D2424LVmkII, you can use only 320 GB of the
disk space with the D2424LVmkII.

About FAT 16 format
When you use the D2424LVmkII to DOS-format a medium (CompactFlash
TM
card) with the capacity
between 128 MB and 529 MB, it is automatically formatted in FAT 16.
Unlike a FAT 32 formatted medium, no folder is created in the FAT 16 formatted medium. You can
only save or load WAV files. See page 98 for details about saving/loading using a FAT 16 formatted
medium.
<Note>:
When you format a hard disk drive with more than 320 GB (for example, 500 MB) using
the D2424LVmkII, the area which is not used by the D2424LVmkII can be used by a personal
computer for other purposes. However, by executing save or load operation from the D2424LVmkII,
data written by a computer may be destroyed. Therefore, we recommend not using the area
which is not used by the D2424LVmkII.
<Note>:
Do not write any data other than D2424LVmkII data to the area formatted by the
D2424LVmkII.
