AMPS-1 OPERATING MANUAL
10 Cardiac Output (optional)
10.1 Overview
Cardiac Output (CO) is the measurement of the volume of blood expelled by either
ventricle of the heart. It is customarily expressed as minute volume, or liters of blood
per minute, calculated as the product of stroke volume (ventricle output per heartbeat)
and the number of beats per minute.
A common method of measuring cardiac output is thermodilution; measurement of the
change in temperature in the bloodstream after injecting a measured amount of cool
fluid (such as saline).
The Cardiac Output Option and Cardiac Output Adapter Box are required to perform
this simulation. See Appendix B - ACCESSORIES for part numbers.
