8 Database Operational Mode and Area Under the
Curve
8.1
Overview
Effective January 1, 2008, the Society of Thoracic Surgeons (STS) has added cerebral oximetry as
a new metric to be collected in its adult cardiac surgery database. This chapter describes the
metrics, as well as how to capture and download the metric data with the INVOS™ regional sat-
uration patient monitoring system. Importantly, this will allow all users access to area under the
curve calculations.

WARNING:
For area under the curve (AUC) to calculate you must set left and right baselines prior to
induction in real-time or accept the auto-baseline value when prompted by the device
(approximately 5 minutes after monitoring begins). Baselines should not be reentered at any
other time or the integrity of AUC will be compromised. Similarly, entering skin closure will cease
calculation of AUC.

Note:
Database software is not compatible with cases collected using previous software versions. Therefore,
previous cases stored on the INVOS™ system should be downloaded and saved elsewhere prior to
loading the database software.
