Infrared light
Light waves just beyond the red end of the visible spectrum.
INVOS™
In vivo optical spectroscopy (INVOS™) is the name of the patented technology that a Covidien
company uses in the operation of the INVOS™ system.
The noninvasive INVOS™ system is intended for use as an adjunct trend monitor of regional
hemoglobin oxygen saturation of blood in the brain or in other tissue beneath the sensor. It is
intended for use in any individual at risk for reduced-flow or no-flow ischemic states.
INVOS™ adult regional saturation sensor
The INVOS™ adult regional saturation sensor is a disposable, nonsterile device applied to adult
patients and used for transmitting and receiving light.
INVOS™ OxyAlert NIRSensor
A disposable, nonsterile sensor with cable applied to patients and used for transmitting and
receiving light.
INVOS™ pediatric regional saturation sensor
The INVOS™ pediatric regional saturation sensor is a disposable, nonsterile device applied to pedi-
atric patients and used for transmitting and receiving light.

Any of the control push buttons on the INVOS™ system monitor (front panel).
Key panel
The group of keys on the front of the INVOS™ system monitor.

LED
Light emitting diode. A semiconductor diode that emits light when voltage is applied.

Menu
Detailed lists of options available to the operator. Menus are found within the INVOS™ system
monitor to assist the operator in functions that can be adjusted.
MRI
Magnetic resonance imaging (MRI). A noninvasive diagnostic procedure employing an MR
scanner to obtain detailed sectional images of the internal structure of the body using nonioniz-
ing means.
