Starting and Operating Instructions

OVERDRIVE DEFEAT

This feature allows the transmis-

sion to shift into the first three

gears, but not overdrive.
Enable this feature to avoid exces-

sive shifting, such as when driving

on a long uphill gradient.
This feature gives you more power

but lower fuel economy.

To turn this feature on or off, do

the following:
• With the shift lever in the auto-

matic overdrive position, press

the button located on the side

of the shift lever.

When the Overdrive Defeat

feature is on, the Overdrive Defeat

Light on the instrument panel will

also be on.

SHIFT LOCK CONTROL SYSTEM

Your vehicle has an automatic

transmission shift lock control

system. With the ignition on, you

have to fully apply the regular

brakes before you can shift out of

(Park).

If you cannot shift out of

(Park):

1. Turn off the ignition.
2. Apply and hold the brake

pedal.

3. Press the shift lever button

and shift into

(Neutral).

4. Start the engine and shift the

transmission into the desired

position.

5. Have the vehicle serviced as

soon as possible.

AUTOMATIC TRANSMISSION

EMERGENCY OPERATION

If a problem is detected with the

automatic transmission, the Auto-

matic Transmission Light will turn

on.

See "Automatic Transmission

Light" under "Indicator and Warn-

ing Lights" in Section 1 for more

information.
In this situation, the transmission

may not shift automatically, or

shifting may be much harsher than

normal.
Have the vehicle serviced as soon

as possible.

Note:

If the automatic transmission

fluid temperature drops below

20°C, the system will enter a

transmission protection mode.
You may notice a change in the

transmission shifting patterns.

This is normal.
The transmission will not shift

into automatic overdrive, and

its lock-up operation will not be

possible.
The system will return to

normal operation when the

transmission fluid temperature

reaches 20°C.
