C. Self Test
The printer has a function that executes the self diagnostics program stored in the video con-
troller when the power is turned ON to check the state of the video controller and control panel.
This function is called self test.
Normally, when the power is turned ON, START SELF-TEST appears in the message area and
the POWER-UP diagnostic set is run after the CPU initialization completes. If you hold down the
up arrow key at this time, you can select other diagnostic set. DIAGNOSTIC SETS appears in
the message area when the printer enters the mode which allows you to select a diagnostic set.
The available diagnostic sets in the self test selection screen are as follows.
• CUSTOM diagnostic set
• FUNCTIONAL diagnostic set
• BURN-IN diagnostic set
• START-UP diagnostic set
Use the up and down keys to select a diagnostic set and press the Enter key to run the set. If
you press the MENU key, the START-UP diagnostic set is run regardless of the selected diag-
nostic set.
Each of the diagnostic sets will be explained in the following sections. See figure 2-6-4 for
the panel operation of each menu.
1. POWER-UP diagnostic set
The POWER-UP diagnostic set checks the following items every time the power is turned ON.
• DIMM slot
• Video ASIC (U7)
• ROM
• Built in flash ROM
• Ethernet controller chip
• Token Ring card (option)
• Display window
• Hard disk drive (option)
When this diagnostic set is completed, the printer enters Standby, and “READY” appears in the
message area. If an operator call or error has occurred, it is indicated in the status display
panel.
2. CUSTOM diagnostic set
If the CUSTOM diagnostic set is selected, the tests executed in the POWER-UP diagnostic set can
be executed individually in more detail. The user will be presented with a series of menus which
allow the user to specify which tests should be run and how to stop the tests.
3. FUNCTIONAL diagnostic set
If the FUNCTIONAL diagnostic set is selected, a more comprehensive set of tests is run, which
are usually used by manufacturing. As the tests require special tools, this set cannot be run in
the field.
4. BURN-IN diagnostic set
If the BURN-IN diagnostic set is selected, a set of tests is executed repeatedly to exercise board
functions.
