2.3 Location of data link connector (DLC)
The DLC (Data Link Connector or Diagnostic Link Connector) is the standardised 16-pin connector where the
interface between the diagnostic scanning tools and the vehicle’s on-board computer is found. The DLC can
normally be found approx. 30.5 cm from the centre of the display and instrument panel (dashboard), in most
vehicles underneath or next to the driver’s side. In some Asian and European vehicle models the DLC is to
be found behind the ashtray. To access the connector the ashtray must be removed. If you cannot find the
DLC refer to your vehicle’s service handbook or contact your specialist garage.
2.4 OBD II readiness monitors
An important part of your vehicle’s OBD II system are the readiness monitors that display whether the
emission components of the OBD II system have been evaluated. Periodic tests on specific systems and
components are carried out with them to ensure that they work within the accepted threshold values.
Currently there are eleven OBD II readiness monitors (or I/M monitors) defined by the US Environmental
Protection Agency (EPA). Not every monitor is supported by every vehicle and the exact number of monitors
in each vehicle depends on the emission control strategy of the individual vehicle manufacturers..
Continuous monitors
-- Some vehicle components or systems are continuously tested by the vehicle’s OBD
II system whereas others are only tested under certain vehicle operating conditions. The continuously
monitored components listed below are always in readiness mode:
1.
Misfire
2.
Fuel system
3.
Comprehensive component monitor (CCM)

GENERAL INFORMATION
2.1 On-board diagnosis (OBD) 2
OBDII represents the second generation of on-board diagnosis. OBDII is also referred to as the vehicle’s
on-board diagnosis system that consists of one or several emission-related ECUs (electronic control units),
the MIL (Malfunction Indicator Light), the DLC (Diagnostic Link Connector) and the cable connecting the
various elements.
PRODUCT FEATURES
•
Works with all vehicles and light lorries manufactured since 2000 for petrol engines and since 2003
for diesel engines that are equipped with an OBDII socket (including CAN, VPW, PWM, ISO and
KWP2000 protocols)
•
Scans and erases general and manufacturer-specific diagnostic trouble codes (DTCs) of the engine
control system
•
Supports multiple error-coded queries, general codes, attached codes and manufacturer-specific
codes
•
Monitors the emission display status of the OBD
•
Reads the VIN (Vehicle Identification Number) of vehicles manufactured since 2002 that support
mode 9.
•
Erases the status of the malfunction indicator lamp (MIL)
•
Has an easy to read, anti-glare, 2 line, back-lit LC display
•
Plug-in (simple connection), high degree of reliability and accuracy makes it easy to use
•
No additional laptop required
•
Compact in size, sits neatly in the palm of the hand
•
Secure data transmission from the on-board computer
•
No batteries needed for power as the power is supplied via the OBD II lead.
•
We would like to point out that this OBD-II scanner does not support all DTCs nor can it read out all
control units.
EXCLUSION OF LIABILITY:
•
INTER-UNION Technohandel GmbH is not liable for damage that arises from improper work
on your car.
2.2 Diagnostic trouble codes (DTCs)
OBD II diagnostic trouble codes are saved by the on-board computer diagnostic system as a reaction to
a problem that is found in the vehicle. These codes point to a certain problem area and are intended to give
you an indication as to where a malfunction can arise in a vehicle. OBD II diagnostic trouble codes consist
of a five-character alphanumerical code. The first character, a letter, indicates by which control system the
code has been triggered. The other four characters, all numbers, give additional information about where
the DTC originates from and what operating conditions have caused the triggering of the code.
In the following you will find an example to illustrate the structure of the parts of the code:
