5. Diagnostic trouble codes (DTC)
Definitions
The following lists of definitions for diagnostic trouble codes contain definitions for generic diagnostic
trouble codes and manufacturer-specific diagnostic trouble codes. In the appendix you will find a CD
where you can look up manufacturer-specific DTCs.
CAUTION: No parts should be replaced only on the basis of a DTC without first consulting the vehicle’s
service manual for more detailed information on possible sources of faults and necessary test procedures.

4.4 Displaying VIN (Chassis number)
With the VIN number you can display the chassis number for all vehicles manufactured since 2002 and
newer vehicles that support Mode 9.
1) Select 4. VIN from the main menu by pressing the OK/ENTER button.
• If the scan tool is not connected refer to “Reading codes” Points 1 to 6 in Paragraph 4.1.
2) Use the SCROLL button to display additional characters in the 17 character string.

“ -- A flashing right arrow shows that additional VIN character string places are available on
the next screen.

“ -- A flashing left arrow shows that additional VIN character string places are available
on the previous screen.
3) Press the OK/ENTER button to return to the main menu.
4.5 Rescanning
With the RESCAN function you can retrieve the most recent ECM stored data or be reconnected
with the vehicle.
If the connection is interrupted,
1) Select
“5. RESCAN” from the main menu by pressing the OK/ENTER button.
• If the scan tool is not connected refer to “Reading codes” Points 1 to 6 in Paragraph 4.1.
2) Use either the SCROLL or the OK/ENTER button to return to the main menu.
4.6 Languages
In this menu item you can choose between different languages. These include:

German
• English
• Spanish
• Dutch
Select a language desired by you by operating the Scroll button until the language you require
appears in the display.
Then confirm this with the
OK/ENTER button.
