3.1.1.2 Phase Adjustment
The phase adjustment of the amplifier’s original module configuration (for optimum
output power across the frequency range) was completed at the factory prior to
shipment. In the event that an original SSPA module fails and is replaced with another
module with a slightly different phase, the amplifier will need to be adjusted for best
performance.
Connect a power meter or spectrum analyzer to the output of the amplifier making sure
all necessary precautions have been taken so no damage will occur to the test
equipment or persons performing the test.
Apply a CW (mid-band) signal to the system IF input at a level that will produce an
output level in the amplifiers P
sat
range. Vary the phase adjustment knob (see
Figure
3-4
for location) in the direction that causes the power to increase while watching the
power meter or spectrum analyzer.
Continue to slowly rotate the knob until the power stops increasing. This setting pro-
vides the optimal output power. The entire band can be spot-checked by changing the
CW frequency and adjusting the phase shifter to verify that the output has been
peaked.
Sometimes a compromise in output power across the band is necessary if wide band
performance is needed or the phase adjustment can be changed to peak the output
power for narrow band operation.
