FO
NBR
Nitrile/Buna/B
una N
A synthetic rubber
copolymer of
acrylonitrile (ACN)
and butadiene
Most commonly used material because
of low cost, good abrasion resistance,
good physical properties, processing
stability and resistance to water, most
oils and most acids, alkalis and non-
aromatic hydrocarbons. OK for #4-#6
fuel oils.
Do not use on ketones, natural gas
condensates, H

, HCl, temperatures
below 0°C or above 100°C. Not
generally acceptable for concentrated
polymer flocculants or most fuels. Do
not use on oils that are above 25° API
F2
NBRL
White NBR
Food grade* white
NBR
Most food products where the
appearance of black rubber particles is
undesirable; e.g., mayonnaise, topical
lotions, etc.
Same as F0 (NBR) The seepex material
is unique as it is filled with silica and
most white elastomers are filled with
Kaolin clay to make it white. While the
seepex F2 is superior to most other
white elastomers, it will not resist
abrasion as well as a carbon black filled
NBR.
F9
HNBR
Therban®
Hydrogenated NBR
With a higher molecular weight than
NBR (at about 4 times the cost), HNBR
is resistant to temperatures to 250
˚
F,
best material for H
2
S, best for abrasion
resistance, best for hysteresis
resistance and more resistant to
chemical attack from lighter
hydrocarbons
Still not acceptable for fuels or ketones,
HCl or H

but good for crude oil to
40° API.
FA
NBR
High ACN NBR
Downhole Pump
Compound
Acrylonitrile content has been
increased from 34% in F0 to 42% to
provide improved resistance to lighter
hydrocarbons found in oil wells. FA
should be compatible with crude oils
to API 15
˚ to
42°
Adding ACN does reduce abrasion and
hysteresis resistance. But oil wells are
just very deep separation tanks,
especially when the API gravity
increases. Abrasion should not be an
issue when the API is >15
˚. Because of
hysteresis, bottom hole temp. is a major
factor for sizing rotors.
FC
HNBR
Therban®
Food Grade*
Hydrogenated NBR
The best material for CIP applications
because of it good abrasion resistance
and higher temperature capability.
Other materials will swell at higher CIP
temperatures and suffer from excess
erosion during CIP.
Same as F9 (HNBR)
FL
NBR
Black Food
Grade* NBR
Black Food Grade*
NBR
Most food products where the
appearance of black rubber particles is
not an issue; e.g., most beverages,
fruit, vegetables, sauces, etc.
Same as F0 (NBR) F0 has some non food
grade components that make
processing easier and make it better for
abrasion resistance than FL.
R0
EPDM
EPDM
Ethylene Propylene
Diene Monomer (ter-
polymer)
The least expensive elastomer. Used
for weather strip because it is resistant
to ozone and sunlight. Best for
ketones, ammonia, NaOCl, clean
water, steam and alcohol.
Temperature to 300°F.
Poor abrasion resistance. Cannot be
used on any vegetable, animal or
mineral oils. Has a higher coefficient of
friction than any other material. Seepex
has added paraffin to the compound to
lower the starting torques.
R1
EPDML
White Food
Grade* EPDM
Ethylene Propylene
Diene Monomer (ter-
polymer)
Used especially for flavors and
fragrances which are in an alcohol-
based carrier liquid. The alcohol is
flashed off later with heat; i.e.,
tobacco, soft drinks, fruit fillings, candy
The worst material for abrasion
resistance. It really should only be used
for true fluids and emulsions that have
no abrasives particles

Diene Monomer (ter-
polymer)
Used especially for flavors and
fragrances which are in an alcohol-

flashed off later with heat; i.e.,
tobacco, soft drinks, fruit fillings, candy
Filled with carbon black for better
abrasion resistance. Still it really should
only be used for true fluids and
emulsions that have no abrasives
particles
