7.8 Gates Carbon Drive™ tooth belt
Press down the belt from the top with a test load of 10 N (2.20 lbs), in the
middle between both sprockets. The deflection should be 10mm +/- 1mm
(fig. 23 ).
Correct belt tension is essential for optimum operation of the Gates Carbon
Drive™ System. Insufficient belt tension can lead to so-called “ratcheting“,
whereby the teeth of the belt can slide over the teeth of the rear sprocket.
Not only does this cause an unpleasant sound but can also damage the
carbon tensile cords. This would render a belt useless. If ratcheting has
occurred, you should replace the belt before the next time it is used. Too
much tension can cause damage to the bearings within the rear hub. It also
increases the wear and drag of your drive system.

7.8.2. Belt tension adjustment
1.
Remove the aluminium covers (Torx 8) of the dropouts (fig. 24 ).
2. Loosen the two M8 bolts on both sides about 0.5 revolutions until the
sledges can move freely (fig. 25 ).
3. Use a 2.5 mm hex key to rotate the setting screws to adjust both
dropout sledges (fig. 26 ). To increase belt tension, turn the setting screw
clockwise. To decrease belt tension, turn counter-clockwise. (fig. 27 ).
4. Make sure to adjust both sledges evenly, so that the wheel is centered
between the seat- and chain stays. Make sure that the setting screw
touches the stop at the dropout.
5. Check the belt tension (chapter 7.8.1).
6. Tighten the two M8 bolts on both sides with a torque of
10 Nm
while
pushing the respective sledge forward.
7.
Install the aluminium covers (fig. 24 ).
