Test fit the doublers in its recess to
ensure it can sit flush.
Below is the left wing’s middle panel
with the tip end facing up. Note the
orientation of the doublers. Outline the
doublers then route their recesses as
you did before.
2. After the doubler cavities have been
routed (four total in each middle wing
panel), epoxy the doublers to the ply
ribs. It is important to align the doublers’
notch with the ply ribs’ notch as well as
their edges that will support the retract
rails. Also, make sure that you epoxy
the doublers to the correct side of each
rib (marking the rib side that faces the
middle panel is a good idea). Use
clamps to hold the doublers in place.
Wipe excess epoxy from the notch area.
3. After the glue dries test fit the spar
sleeve and a retract rail in the rib. Use a
file or sanding block on the rib to allow
these parts to fit easily into the rib, but
not too loose. Be careful to not change
the height of the rib where the retract rail
rests.
4. Assemble the top half, inner and
outer wing saddles by taping them
together. Place the wing (top side
down) onto the saddle and again test fit
the ribs between the wing’s inner,
middle and outer panels. Temporarily
insert the spar sleeve to register the
ribs. You will note that the ribs may
extend aft of the wing. Mark a line
where the TE of the wing is on the rib
and cut or sand to the line.
5. Lay a piece of waxed paper that is
wider than the middle wing panel onto
the saddle in preparation for gluing in
the ribs. Mix up good amount of 30
minute epoxy. First, apply epoxy to the
outer side of the outer rib and place it
against the outer panel. Then apply
epoxy to the outer side of the middle
wing panel and place it next to the outer
rib. Lastly, apply epoxy to both sides of
the inner rib and place it next to the
middle panel. Place the inner wing
panel next to the inner rib.
Take two pieces of waxed paper and
place them over the each rib’s spar
sleeve notch, then insert the spar
sleeve. You are not gluing in the sleeve
at this time, just using it to register the
ribs - the waxed paper keeps it from
