the fin’s foam saddles to help the curing
process. Also note that the fin’s skins
(as well as all other skins that contain
corrugations) do not have raised rivet
details. This is because the type of
mold needed to produce crisp
corrugation edges do not produce crisp
raised rivets. Therefore, if this is a detail
you wish to recreate, you can apply glue
drop rivets later and use the photos of
the full-scale aircraft on the reference
CD to guide you.
1. The fin and rudder skins are
combined for each side (left and right).
To finish trim the fin skin’s TE, mark a
line 1” from the aft most edge of the fin’s
corrugations. In the photo below, the
fin’s skin is on the right. Trim with an X-
acto and straight edge or use scissors.
2. To trim the fin skin’s LE, use scissors
to cut the excess material where it
begins to deviate from the contour of the
fin.
3. To help position the skin on the fin,
draw the following reference lines on the
fin; 1) a line ¾” forward of the fin’s TE,
2) a line perpendicular to the TE where
the CBT cut begins, 3) a line 5/8” below
the line you just made, and 4) Insert the
fin into the tail assembly and mark a line
where the fin meets the fuse and tail
assembly side walls.
Line No. 1 above is where the skin’s
corrugations’ aft ends are located, and
line No. 3 is the top of the upper most
corrugation. Lay the skin in position.
Trim the bottom of the skin just below
line 4. Trim the top along the dashed
line shown below.
4. The corrugations will overlay portions
of the balsa blocks and in these areas
the balsa block needs to be routed
about 1/8” deep. You do not need to
route the foam under the corrugations
as it will give under pressure (applied
later). Use a dremel tool or similar to
remove the balsa under the
corrugations.
