located on the bottom surface of the
fuse TE at the centerline. Note that the
plates are centered in the area that the
tail cone covers.
19. Use CA to glue in the ply plates into
the recesses. Reinstall the tail cone,
this time insert the top edge under the
fuse TE top skin. You may need to use
an X-acto blade to separate some skin
from the fuse TE so that the tail cone
can be inserted far enough to have its
forward edges meet the lines on the
fuse TE sides. Now is when you need
to ensure that the tail cone is properly
aligned with the aft bottom skin and its
centerline is aligned with the fuse
centerline. Installing the stab and
elevators can help you eye the tail
cone’s alignment. Tape the tail cone in
place once you have it aligned.
20. Drill 5/64” holes though the tail cone
and into the center of the ply blocks. To
drill the bottom hole, you will also drill
through the aft bottom skin. Use #2
button head screws, 1/2” long to secure
the tail cone. After you drill all the holes
you can remove the aft bottom skin as
you don’t need that attached.
Mounting the Fin
1. You can remove the stab spar and
1/8” anti rotation rod for this next step.
To test fit the fin (now with skins), into
the tail assembly, carefully guide the fin
down the fin post keeping it between the
fin skins’ aft edge overlaps. As it
approaches the bottom you will probably
notice some of the side skins will need
to be trimmed to clear the tail assembly
pieces. Areas at the lower aft corners
and around the fin spar will likely need
to be trimmed so that the bottom of the
fin rests flush against the bottom of the
tail assembly. You can see the bottom
by looking through the spar hole.
2. Once the fin can bottom out without
having its skins bent, apply 30 minute
epoxy to the front and back of the fin
spar, bottom of the tail assembly where
it mates with the fin bottom and on the
inside of the fin post. Carefully slide the
fin into position. To help keep the fin
post firmly against the fin while the glue
cures, use a long thin piece of scrap
wood at least as thick as the skin
overlap and place it against the back of
the fin post, then apply masking tape
over the scrap piece and onto the fin
sides.
Remember to check that the fin has the
left offset at the LE – about 1/8” left of
the centerline.

scale rudder looks, see the image
