With the spar installed in each sleeve,
insert the sleeves into the slot.
Ensure the sleeves are centered, and
then attach your clamps to ensure the
sleeves are against the bottom of the
spar slot. Support the weight of the
clamps with support blocks.
4. If you notice any excessive gaps in
the spar slot add more glue at those
locations. During the first hour of the
cure you will need to monitor the
expanding glue and remove excess
glue. Let the wing cure for at least four
hours.
5. During the cure time you can epoxy
in the 1/8” ply pieces for the rear wing
joiner plate as shown below.
6. After the epoxy cures, position the ¼”
wing hold down plate in place and drill a
9/64” hole through the plate and into the
blocks. Use #8 x ¾” screws to attach
the plate. This plate serves two
purposes. First, it helps to stiffen up the
wing as a one piece unit during
transportation and secondly, you will
later drill holes for the wing hold down
bolts and the plate will help to distribute
the pressure across the wing. Remove
the wing hold down plate.
7. To stiffen the wing further around the
wing hold down plate, mix some 30
minute epoxy and brush it into the cavity
at those areas that the square sections
of fiberglass will cover. As shown
below, note that the fiberglass pieces do
not extend all the way to the centerline
and they extend past the cavity about
1.5”. Apply more epoxy onto the wing
surface around the cavity where the
cloth will be draped over. Fold in the
fiberglass then brush on more epoxy
over the fiberglass.
8. Place a piece of waxed paper over
the fiberglass pieces and then screw
down the wing hold down plate.
Trim the waxed paper closely around
the plate. Use a brush to apply more
epoxy if needed so the fiberglass lays
down flat around the cavity and let it
cure. Remove the plate once fully
cured.
Once the polyurethane glue has cured
around the spar sleeves, you can
remove the clamps. Flip the wing over
to perform the next task.
9. Place the top wing, ¼” ply joiner
plate as shown below.
