13. Cut out a slot in the flap’s ½” thick
LE balsa – DO NOT cut through the 1/8”
balsa. This slot should be cut slightly
smaller than 1/8” wide. Use a small file
to gradually enlarge the slot so that the
flap control horn can be inserted
snuggly.
Use a round tooth pick to pierce small
holes in the sides of the slot so they can
fill with epoxy. Test fit the ply flap horn
in the slot. When a tight fit is achieved
add 30 minute epoxy into the slot and
apply epoxy to the horn so it fills the
three large holes (not the small hole for
the clevis), now install the horn. Wipe
away the excess glue. Coat the
exposed horn with some thin CA.
When repeating the flap servo
installation for the opposite flap, be
aware of the servo’s position. As
positioned below, and in comparison to
the other flap servo shown above, this
orientation can use a standard Y
harness to connect the flaps to a single
channel on the receiver. If the flap
servos point in opposite directions, then
you would need a reverse direction Y
harness. If you were to use fowler
hinges, this would be the case as you
want the flap horn to be as close to the
center of the flap as possible, thus
requiring both servo arms to face toward
the center of the wing. When using the
point hinges as illustrated, the horn
location is not as critical.
14. The flap’s servo arms will be
pointed towards the top of the wing, so
some foam will need to be removed.
With a dremel tool make a hole in the
balsa TE where the push rod will exit –
confirm this location by installing the flap
and marking the TE where the horn is
located.
It’s best to make this hole small, and
then enlarge as needed. Burn or route
the foam to make a push rod tunnel to
