Fiber Cable Connections
Stratum is designed for fiber-optic interfaces between the IDU and the ODU to enable Fast Ethernet-speed
connections over a distance of up to 1000 feet with an 8 dB light budget.
The Stratum Outdoor Unit (ODU) is suitable for weather-exposed installations with ambient temperatures of –30º to
+55º C, in full sun and rain conditions. The Alignment Mounting Bracket (AMB) holds the ODU, aims the 18 inch
square flat panel antenna, and attaches to a mounting pole. The ODU and AMB will withstand a wind-load of any
periodicity and direction with wind force up to 80 miles per hour. Fiber-optic connections to the ODU,
recommended below, are specified to address the same range of environmental conditions.
Each ODU includes two ST-type bulkhead connectors, one for the transmit fiber, one for the receive fiber. Proxim
supplies with each ODU two ST connectors with custom boots designed to be weatherproof when properly installed
on a sub-cable jacket with outside diameter of 2.7 to 3.0 mm. These connectors are part of the Fiber Termination
Kit described in the following section. (
If it is not feasible to use these connectors, then you must use some other
means of weatherproofing the ST interface. For example, you can also use heat-shrink tubing over the entire
connector with silicone rubber to seal both ends of the heat-shrink tubing and keep moisture out of the ST interface.

Any FDDI-grade fiber may be used which meets the following requirements:
1. 62.5/125, multi-mode fiber with a bandwidth of at least 160 Mbps.
2. Kevlar strength member to allow pulling without damage to the fibers.
3. Cable jacket with UV inhibitor if cable is run outside a conduit.
4. Sub-cable jackets with UV inhibitors if sub-cable is fanned outside a conduit.
Breakout type cable is highly recommended for outdoor fiber runs due to its strength and weather resistance.
Breakout cable can be connected directly to the ODU ST connectors provided the breakout sub-cables meet the
requirements stated above.
Fiber Termination Box
Proxim offers an optional Fiber Termination Box (FTB), which provides a weatherproof enclosure for termination
of fiber runs.
The FTB includes:

Box and cover with seal
•
Cable grip for fiber cable from IDU
•
Fiber jumper for connection to ODU
•
Cable grip for fiber jumper to ODU
•
Internal bulkhead patch panel and connectors
•
Sealed mounting screws to attach the FTB to Stratum Alignment Mounting Bracket (AMB)
