Accessing the User Interface Software
Connecting the Management Console
Attach one end of the serial cable to the RJ-45 CONSOLE port connector on the rear of the IDU.
Install the RJ-45 to DB-9 adapter on the other end of this serial cable.
Connect the DB-9 adapter to your PC or laptop’s COM port .
You must use the DB-9 adapter supplied by Proxim, even if you use a DB-9 to DB-25 adapter to
match your PC or laptop’s COM port. The adapter supplied by Proxim converts the RJ-45
CONSOLE port wiring to standard COM port wiring.
To setup the Stratum for the first time, open a VT-100 terminal emulation program, like HyperTerminal, on the PC
to which you connected the serial cable. The communications settings for the console terminal must be:

9600 baud
•
8 bits
•
No parity
•
1 stop bit
•
No flow control
•
VT-100 emulation
Alternately, you may use a VT-100 terminal to setup the Stratum.
If you use a PC running a VT-100 terminal emulator, make sure that the emulator uses the arrows for VT-100
commands, not for Windows operation. If the arrow keys do not work properly, use the
Tab key to move between
fields. Also, some terminal emulators, like HyperTerminal, default to “auto emulation.” You may need to
manually configure the session to use VT-100 as the emulation type within the Settings tab of the session’s
Properties screen.
Turning on the IDU
After mounting the IDU and connecting the serial cable, turn on the power switch. The Stratum will perform an
internal set of power-up diagnostics and you will see a display like the one shown below.
