SERIE  IM

GOVERNOR

Governor  is  of  the  centrifugai  type,  consisting  of  flyweights
housed  in  the  governor  gear  directly  driven  by  the  crankshaft
(Fig.  30).  Centrifugai  force  makes  the  weight  move  outwards
pushing  drive  rod  (A)  sideways.  Axial  movement  of  drive
rod  (A)  is trasmitted  by the lever (B) to the fuel throttle valve
(C),  through  control  linkages.  Tension  exerted  by  accelerator
control  (E)  on  governor  spring  (D)  acts  against  the  governor
centrifugai  force.  Upon  engine  load  variations  at  a  fìxed  po
sition  of  the  accelerator,  governor  operates  as  follows:  en
gine  speed  increases  when  load  is  taken  off,  centrifugai  force
pushes  flyweights  aside  thus  rnoving  drive  rod

(A)

outwards

to reduce fuel feeding;  engine settles to a slightly higher speed

(droop).  Speed  drops  when  engine  is  loaded,  reducing  cntri

fugal  force;  the  tension  of  the  governor  spring  pushes  the
governor  drive  rod  (A)  inwards,  thus  increasing  fuel  feeding:

engine speed slightly decreases and sets to a lower lever (gover
nor  droop).

Governor  action  on  the  fuel  throttle  valve  enables  autornatic
stabilization  of  engine  speed  at  the  various  engine  loads.

To  any  new  position  of  the  accelerator  corresponds  a  spring
tension  variation.  A  new  equilibrium  of  governor  centrifugai
force and spring tension is  established  with consequent  change
of  engine  speed.

Governor  Check

Check  gear  governor  weights  and  their  housings  for  burrs.
Axis  of  weight-pins  must  be  perpendicu!ar  to  gear-axis.

Drive rod:  surface on which weight-skids work must be smooth
and  normai  to  the  hole.

Play between drive rod and journal must be kept within 0,10--:--

0,20  rnrn.

Should  play  be  higher  replace  drive  rod.

LUBRICATION

Lubrication  is  of  the  centrifugally  forced  type.  Oil  trapped

between  gear  teeth  is  thrown  into  the  centrifugating  baffle,
when  crankshaft  and  cii  slinger  gear  mesh.  By  centrifugai
force  cii  is  sent  to  the  cra,1kpin  bearing  due  to  rirn  shape  of
the  centrifugating  baffle  (Fig.  31).

Oil  impurities  are  deposited  around  the  centrifugating  baffle

outer  ring,  so  providing  a  slight  fìltering  effect  on  lubricat
ing  cii.

Oil  centrifugating  baffle  and  crankshafc  cii  passage  should  be
cleaned  as  described  in  paragraph  ' crankshaft'.
