Note:
This documentation includes references to IBM web sites, products, and information about obtaining
service. IBM is Lenovo's preferred service provider for the System x products.
IBM provides tools that can automatically collect and send data or call IBM Support when an error is
detected. These tools can help IBM Support speed up the process of diagnosing problems.
IBM Electronic Service Agent
IBM Electronic Service Agent monitors, tracks, and captures system hardware errors and hardware and
software inventory information, and reports serviceable problems directly to IBM Support.
You can also choose to collect data manually. It uses minimal system resources, and can be downloaded
from the IBM website. For more information and to download IBM Electronic Service Agent, go to
http://www.ibm.com/support/esa.
IMM2 first failure data capture (FFDC) feature
The integrated management module II (IMM2) provides a first failure data capture (FFDC) feature that you
can use to collect the log data for system hardware errors into a file, which you can send to IBM Support
for problem determination assistance.
The following sections provide information about how to use this IMM2 feature to
generate and download the FFDC log data file. For more information on the FFDC
data download commands, see the Integrated Management Module II User's Guide at
http://www-947.ibm.com/support/entry/portal/docdisplay?lndocid=MIGR-5086346.
Capturing the FFDC log using the IMM2 Web Interface
This section provides the steps to generate and download the first failure data capture (FFDC) log data
using the IMM2 Web interface.
To generate and download the first failure data capture (FFDC) log data using the IMM2 Web interface,
complete the following steps:
1. Log in to the IMM2.
2. From the
Server and Support
tab, click the
Download Server Data
option.
3. Next, click on the
Download Now
button. A progress window displays indicating that the file is being
generated. It prompts you to save the file and to provide the location in which you want the file saved to.
Capturing the FFDC log using IMM2 CLI commands
This section provides the steps to generate and download the first failure data capture (FFDC) log data
using IMM2 CLI commands.
Note:
You must have an tftp or sftp server setup prior to using this procedure.
To generate and download the first failure data capture (FFDC) log data using IMM2 CLI commands,
complete the following steps:
1. First, set up a tftp or sftp server.
2. Log in to the IMM2 using Telnet or SSH Server.
3. At the command prompt, type
ffdc generate
.
Note:
You can also use the status command to check the progress of the file generation. You can use
the copy command to obtain a copy of the existing log data file and the delete command to delete the
existing log data file.
4. Next, type
ffdc status
to check the status.
