switch. If the host-reported error message from the switch is known, or a customer
communications failure symptom is known, go to Table 16 on page 35. With the
error message or the symptom identified, perform the recommended action as
defined in Table 17 on page 35.
Visually inspect the LEDs
Observe the front panel LED status indicators and check them against the
information in Table 16 on page 35. If a faulty behavior exists, perform the
recommended action as defined in Table 17 on page 35.
Determine if zoning is in effect
The 2109 Model S16 Switch implements zoning.
Zoning
is a way of telling the
switch to not allow some ports to communicate to others. It is possible that the
customer has ports zoned in a way that prevents them from communicating. Ask
the customer if zoning is in effect. If it is, the customer should check the zoning
setup to make sure that zoning is not the source of the problem.
Zoning is explained in the IBM SAN Fibre Channel Switch 2109 Model S16 Users
Guide . To display and check zones, the customer must log on to the switch using
Telnet in admin mode and issue the zoneShow command. If any zones are active
or configured, they are displayed.
Checking problems on attached devices
To determine whether the attached devices are the source of the problem, check
the following on the attached devices:

LEDs
v
Display panels
v
Firmware levels
v
Operability
Checking FC host versions
Determine the current versions of the following hardware and software elements:
v
The operating system version
v
The service pack version
v
The hot fix version
v
The HBA hardware version
v
The HBA firmware version
v
The HBA device driver version
Compare the current versions with the list of supported host platforms and
fibre-channel host bus adapters on the following Web site:
www.ibm.com/storage/fcswitch
If an update is required for any of these elements, perform the update.
