Chapter 4. Maintenance action plans
This chapter discusses the maintenance action plans (MAPs) for the 2109 Model
S16 Switch.
All service actions start from this point. The instructions in this chapter resolve most
switch or GBIC failures.
The switch provides extensive diagnostics that can be used in extended service
environments that are not resolved in these maps. These diagnostics are described
in the overview in “Chapter 1. Introduction” on page 1 and extensively in
“Appendix B. Diagnostics” on page 91. Before beginning, familiarize yourself with
Figure 16 to understand where the various switch components and indicators are
located.
Attention: If you are going to service a functional switch, never unplug cables or
GBICs when there is activity on the associated ports. This causes an immediate
failure of the communications path. To determine if a port has active
communications, see “Visually inspect the LEDs” on page 34. If it becomes
necessary to unplug active ports, you must have the customer stop all
communications on these ports.

as much information as possible before performing a repair action.
