Uplink Failure Detection
Uplink Failure Detection
Uplink Failure Detection (UFD) is an alternative path redundancy feature that
works in conjunction with active-standby NIC teaming functionality on the
server to create a failover path for traffic from the server NIC through to the
distribution switch.
UFD tracks the link state on the uplink ports. If an uplink port goes down, it
enables the switch to auto-disable the specific downlinks connected to the
blade server’s NICs. In turn, this enables active-standby NIC teaming software
to detect link failure on the primary NIC port and initiate a failover from the
primary to the secondary NIC, ensuring server availability at all times.
UFD is configured by pairing a Link to Monitor (LtM) with a Link to Disable
(LtD). When correctly configured, UFD allows loop-free active-standby redun
dancy and prevents the server from transmitting down a failed path.
N o t e
For UFD functionality to work as expected, the NIC teaming must be in active-
standby configuration mode.
Terminology
Link to Monitor (LtM)
: The Link to Monitor group consists of one or more
uplink ports, or one or more trunk groups that contains only uplink ports. The
switch monitors the LtM for link failure.
Link to Disable (LtD)
: The Link to Disable group consists of one or more
downlink ports and trunk groups that contain only downlink ports. When the
switch detects a link failure on the LtM, it automatically disables all ports in
the LtD. When the LtM returns to service, the switch automatically enables all
ports in the LtD.
