Problems with /etc/inittab
HP-UX requires a go o d /etc/inittab le in order to b o ot. This le can b e
remov ed or corrupted. If this is the case, HP-UX cannot b o ot. F ollo wing is a
cop y of a go o d /etc/inittab le. Y ou may wish to create this le to b o ot
y our system. Y ou may wish to use the follo wing steps:
1. T yp e these t w o commands:
$ /etc/mv /etc/inittab /etc/inittab.old
$ vi /etc/inittab
2. En ter the following in /etc/inittab :
init:2:initdefault:
stty::sysinit:stty 9600 clocal icanon echo opost onlcr ienqak ixon icrnl ignpar </dev/systty
brc1::bootwait:/etc/bcheckrc </dev/console >/dev/console 2>&1 # fsck, etc.
brc2::bootwait:/etc/brc >/dev/console 2>&1 # boottime commands
link::wait:/bin/sh -c "rm -f /dev/syscon; ln /dev/systty /dev/syscon" >/dev/console 2>&1

powf::powerwait:/etc/powerfail >/dev/console 2>&1 # power fail routines

Problems with /etc/checklist
Y our system may not b o ot if y our disks could not b e moun ted to pro vide sw ap
for y our system. If this is the case, /etc/c hec klist may b e missing or corrupt.
Here is an sample /etc/checklist le:

Y ou may need to create the device les:
/etc/mknod /dev/dsk/6s0 b 7 0x201600
Problems with /etc/passwd
If the system b o ots and y ou see a login: prompt, but y ou can't log in as
root , the /etc/passwd le may b e missing or corrupt. The following en try can
b e put in to /etc/passwd to pro vide a login for root . This sp ecic en try do es
not require a passw ord.
