MIDI 1O•1
• 10 MIDI
WHAT IS MIDI?
MIDI is the abbreviation for “M
usical Instrument
Digital
Interface”, a standard interface used to
connect two or more electronic musical instru-
ments together in order that one pilots the other.
This chapter discusses some of the more com-
mon MIDI applications for the WK3 on a general
basis. Detailed instructions on how to configure
the WK3 MIDI channels and set other MIDI pa-
rameters in the MIDI function of the Edit Perform-
ance section are found in “Edit MIDI” of the Edit
Performance chapter (Reference Guide).
Information relating to selection messages, both
via MIDI channels as well as the Common chan-
nel are detailed in the Selection Chapter of the
Reference Guide.
WK3 is equipped with a standard MIDI interface
consisting of a MIDI In, a MIDI Out and a MIDI
Thru port.
T o use WK3 as a stand alone instrument, it is not
necessary to connect the MIDI ports.
With MIDI it is possible to:
•
use WK3 to pilot another musical instrument
with WK3;
•
connect WK3 to an external sequencer to
programme Songs and Styles.
•
control WK3 with a master keyboard or other
controlling device (guitar controller, wind con-
troller, drum pads...);
WHAT TRA
VELS VIA MIDI?
The MIDI OUT port does not emit sounds, but
transmits digital messages which are received by
the connected instrument (slave) in order to be
remote-controlled.
For example, when you play a note on the WK3
keyboard, the MIDI OUT port transmits a Note
On message which enters the MIDI IN port of the
connected instrument and plays its sounds.
Another example: when the WK3 trackball is op-
erated, the instrument connected to the WK3 MIDI
OUT receives a PitchBend or Modulation mes-
sage.
WK3 generates and recognises several different
types of MIDI messages:
•
Note On, Note Off, V
elocity - messages gen-
erated by the keyboard.
•
Pitch Bend - message generated by lateral
movements of the trackball.
•
Program Change (abbreviated: PC) - mes-
sages which select Sounds, Styles, Perform-
ances and Songs (normally coupled with a
BankSelect message).
•
Control Change (abbreviated: CC) - mes-
sages which activate MIDI Controllers. For
example:
CC00 = BankSelect;
CC01 = Modulation;
CC07 = Volume;
CC64 = Sustain Pedal;
etc...
The list of MIDI messages transmitted and rec-
ognised by WK3 is in the Appendix.
