Disk 6•1
• 6 Disk
of the following formats: WK3; WK4*, MS-DOS,
Atari ST/Falcon, and Generalmusic CD Series
and WS Series Songs and Style disks.
* WK4 Songs disks are recognised if the WK4
data conforms to the GMX format, a General MIDI
extension exclusive to Generalmusic which
renders the first three banks of all WK Series units
(WK3 and WK4) fully compatible.
WK3 is not able read Song, Style and Sound
data in non-Generalmusic instrument formats.
The exclusive format of musical instruments
adopted by one manufacturer is incompatible with
instruments of other manufacturers. To
exchange
Songs with instruments of other manufacturers,
the Song must be saved as MIDI file format data
to an MS_DOS formatted disk.
FILES
Data is stored on disks in the form of files
. Files
identify Songs, Song/Styles, Performances (con-
taining Sounds), Styles and Samples.
The contents of a WK3 format disk comprises a
set of files which reflects the structure of the in-
strument’s internal memory (RAM).
Working with disks provides you with a means of
building a library of Sounds, Samples, Perform-
ances, Styles and Songs that you can load into
the WK3 RAM Memory at any time.
As you become more familiar with your WK3,
you’ll discover the practical uses of working with
disks, because of the flexibility and power that
they offer
.
This chapter introduces you to the concepts of
Files, Disks and RAM Memory, explains the prin-
cipal Disk functions by showing you how load and
save Songs, Styles, Performances, Samples and
MIDI Files.
Those who are using floppy disks for the first time
are recommended to refer to the pages at the
end of this chapter which discusses disk handling
precautions, how to insert and extract disks and
other general information.
Floppy Disk formats
WK3 handles 3.5" HD
and 3.5" DD
disks (DD
type for MIDI files only). These are of the most
commonly used type, available in office station-
er’s, supermarkets and computer outlets.
WK3 is able to read data stored on disks in one
