Glossary
VoIP Voice over IP. Also known as Internet telephony. Originally, VoIP described the two-way
transmission of real-time voice calls over a data network that uses IP, but increasingly is used to
describe “anything over IP”, including voice, fax, video, and so forth. Some people use the term
VoIP to indicate audio data sent over a private intranet or WAN and the term Internet telephony to
indicate audio data sent over the public Internet. Frequently, however, the two terms are used
synonymously.
VPN Virtual Private Network. VPNs provide private communications over a public network such as the
Internet by setting up a secure tunnel between two end-points.
WAN Wide Area Network. A computer network that spans a relatively large geographical area.
Typically, a WAN consists of two or more local-area networks (LANs). The computers that make
up the WAN may be connected through the telephone system, leased lines, or satellites. The
Internet is the largest WAN in existence.
WAP Wireless Application Protocol. WAP is a language used for writing Web pages that uses far less
overhead, which makes it more preferable for wireless access to the internet. WAP runs over all the
major wireless networks. It is also device independent, requiring only a minimum functionality in
the unit so that it can be used with a myriad of phones and handheld devices.
W-CDMA Wideband Code Division Multiple Access. W-CDMA is a 3G technology that increases data
transmission rates in GSM systems by using the CDMA air interface instead of TDMA. In the
ITU’s IMT-2000 3G specification, W-CDMA has become known as the Direct Sequence (DS)
mode. See also

XML EXtensible Markup Language. An open standard for describing data from the Web. XML is a
subset of SGML (Standard Generalized Markup Language), which is a language designed
especially for Web documents. Using a tag structure similar to
HTML , XML defines data elements
on a Web page and on business-to-business documents. Unlike HTML, however, which defines
how elements are displayed, XML defines the type of content that those elements contain. Unlike
HTML, which uses predefined tags, XML allows developers to define their own tags. These
custom tags can identify virtually any data items, such as product, sales representative name, and
amount due. This enables Web pages to function like database records.
