Glossary
OSN
Optimization and Services Node (OSN). The OSN is a required node of the T3100 platform.
Provides laptop and handset Optimization Services, WebGate Service, T3100 Service Selection,
and many other Data Services functions.
packet switch
A WAN device that routes packets along the most efficient path and allows a communications
channel to be shared by multiple connections.
payload
The payload is a portion of a cell, frame, or packet that contains upper-layer information (data).
PBR
Policy-Based Routing (PBR)
allows the operator to virtualize and control optimization for
VLANs and GRE tunnels. With PBR, sensitive corporate traffic or MVNO (Mobile Virtual
Network Operator) traffic can be segregated and routed based on source IP address and/or
interface.
PCS
Personal Communications Services. A two-way voice, messaging, and data service designed as the
second generation of cellular. This radio spectrum, in the 1.8-2GHz range, is typically used for
digital cellular transmission that competes with analog and digital services in the 800MHz and
900MHz bands.
PCU
Packet Control Unit. The PCU is a separate hardware element that directs data traffic to the
network. It is associated with the
hardware.
PDN
Packet Data Network. The PDN represents a public or private packet-based network, such as an IP
or X.25 network.
PDP
Packet Data Protocol. PDP is the network protocol used by packet data networks that communicate
with a
network. IP is an example of a PDP supported by GPRS. The protocol refers to a set
of information (such as a charging ID) that describes a mobile wireless service call or session,
which is used by mobile stations and GGSNs in a GPRS network to identify the session.
PDSN
Packet Data Serving Node. A PDSN is a connection point in a cdma2000 Packet Core Network
(PCN) that forwards data transmissions from the base station controller (
) to the Internet for
Mobile IP applications. To perform this function, the PDSN interfaces with the Radio Network
Node (often called a Packet Control Function or PCF), with a
AAA server, and with
home agents (HA).
POP3
Post Office Protocol 3, a widely-used protocol for storing mail on a mail server until users log on
and download it. All pending messages and attachments are downloaded at the same time. POP3
can be used with or without the
messaging protocol. POP3 is expected to be eventually
replaced by
portal
A Web site that provides a variety of services and resources, such as search engines, news, white
and yellow pages directories, free e-mail and VoIP, discussion groups, online shopping, and links
to other sites. These sites were originally called portals because they were designed to be chosen
by web users as their home sites, or entry into the web. A voice portal is a portal that can be
accessed by telephone or by a cell phone using speech recognition and text-to-speech technologies.
provisioning
Provisioning is the creation of a subscriber account, or modification of parameters for an existing
subscriber account. Provisioning includes both subscriber account registration and device
activation.
