Glossary
3G network
Third Generation mobile network. Refers generically to a category of next-generation mobile
networks, such as
and IMT-2000. The services associated with 3G provide the ability to
transfer simultaneously both voice data (phone calls) and non-voice data (downloading
information or exchanging e-mail).
APN
Access Point Name. This identifies a Packet Data Network in a
network. The APN consists
of Network ID, which identifies the external service requested by a user of GPRS service, and an
Operator ID, which specifies routing information.
ASM
Application Service Module (ASM). The ASM is a blade server in the T3100 shelf that runs the
applications that process subscriber traffic. These applications include web optimization, media
optimization, and traffic management.
Auc
The Authentication Center (AuC) is a unit that provides authentication and encryption parameters
that verify the user’s identity and ensure the confidentiality of each call over the radio channel.
bandwidth
The range of a channel’s limits; the broader the bandwidth, the faster data can be sent.
BMCLI
Bytemobile Command Line Interface. The BMCLI is an extended Command Line Interface,
similar
to CLIs provided with most industry-standard IP routing and service platforms, that
enables you to configure hardware and software.
bps
bits per second. A single on-off pulse of data; eight bits are equivalent to one byte.
BSC
Base Station Controller. The BSC provides all the control functions and physical links between the
. It is a high-capacity switch that provides functions such as handover, cell
configuration data, and control of radio frequency (RF) power levels in base transceiver stations. A
number of BSCs are served by a single MSC.
BSS
Base Station System. The BSS consists of base station controllers (
) and the base transceiver
stations (
BTS
Base Transceiver Station. The BTS handles the radio interface to the mobile station. The BTS is
the radio equipment (transceivers and antennas) needed to service each cell in the network. A
group of BTSs are controlled by a
cache
A technique in which recently accessed data or commands are stored in memory in order to speed
up subsequent access to the same information.
