T-Series Traffic Director Installation, Configuration and Administration Guide

subnetwork

In IP networks, subnetworks are networks arbitrarily segmented by a network administrator in
order to provide a routing structure while shielding the subnetwork from the addressing complexity
of attached networks. Oftentimes called a subnet.

switchover

The process of transfer of function from a failed component to an alternate one while preserving
the operational state of the overall system. Switchover occurs when there is no failure in the system
to prompt the transfer. See also

failover

.

TCP/IP

Transmission Control Protocol/Internet Protocol. A set of protocols for data transmission. TCP/IP
has become the de facto standard for data transmission over networks, including the Internet.

TDMA

Time Division Multiplex Access. Type of multiplexing where two or more channels of information
are transmitted over the same link by allocating a different time interval (“slot” or “slice”) for the
transmission of each channel, that is, the channels take turns to use the link. Some kind of periodic
synchronizing signal or distinguishing identifier usually is required so that the receiver can tell
which channel is which. See also

CDMA

WAN

, and

cdma2000

.

UDP

User Datagram Protocol. The IETF standard transport-layer protocol used for simple,
transaction-oriented, host-to-host communication. Delivery is not guaranteed.

UMTS

Universal Mobile Telecommunications System. The European implementation of the 3G wireless
phone system. UMTS, which is part of IMT-2000, provides service in the 2GHz band and offers
global roaming and personalized features. Designed as an evolutionary system for

GSM

 network

operators, multimedia data rates up to 2 Mbps are expected using the W-CDMA technology. In the
meantime,

GPRS

 and

EDGE

are interim steps that will speed up wireless data for GSM.

unified
messaging

Technology that allows users to have a single electronic in-box that handles all types of messages,
including voice mail, e-mail, and fax.

URL

Universal Resource Locator. The global address of documents and other resources on the World
Wide Web. The first part of the address indicates the protocol to use (for example, http://, https://,
ftp://, etc.). The second part specifies the IP address or the domain name where the resource is
located (for example, mysite.com). The following URLs point to different files at the domain
mysite.com.

ftp://www.mysite.com/games/poker.exe — This URL specifies an executable file
(game.exe) that should be fetched using the FTP protocol

http://www.mysite.com/pictures/index.html — This URL specifies a Web page that
should be fetched using the HTTP protocol.

http://192.168.12.17/pictures/index.html — This example uses an IP address instead
of the domain name mysite.com.

VLAN

Virtual Local Area Network. A LAN logical broadcast domain segment, created through bridging
(switching) software.

VLR

Visitor Location Register. The VLR is a database in a cellular system that contains all the
subscribers that are currently visiting within this service area. This temporary information about
subscribers is needed by the

MSC

in order to service visiting subscribers. The VLR is always

integrated with the MSC. See

HLR
