Glossary-5
Glossary
IMAP
Internet Message Access Protocol, a protocol for retrieving e-mail messages. The latest version,
IMAP4, is similar to POP3 but supports additional features. For example, IMAP4 supports allows
e-mail clients to selectively download messages, supports shared mailboxes and folders for
archiving messages, and provides better integration with MIME, which is used to attach files. Like
, IMAP uses
for communication between the e-mail client and server.
IMSI
International Mobile Subscriber Identity. The ISMI is a unique identifier stored in the Subscriber
Identity Module of a mobile station (MS). The MS sends the IMSI to a
the MS in the
network. The BTS looks for the IMSI in the
.
IP
ISDN
Integrated Services Digital Network. A digital telephone service for voice and data that provides
greater bandwidth, higher transmission rates, and more sophisticated services than standard analog
telephone service.
kilobit
(Abbreviated Kb.) Either 1,024 bits or 1000 bits, depending on the context. In the context of data
storage, a kilobit consists of 1024 bits. In the context of data transfer, however, a kilobit consists of
1000 bits. Data transfer rates are measured in kilobits per second, abbreviated as Kbps. See
.
kilobyte
(Abbreviated K or KB in US English and K or Kbyte in international English.) Either 1,024 bytes
or 1000 bytes, depending on the context. Strictly speaking, a kilobyte has 1,024 bytes. Often,
however, the term is used loosely to mean 1,000 bytes.
LAN
Local Area Network. The computer network at your office or home, up until it connects to the
outside world. A LAN is also a private computer network that is limited to a relatively small area,
usually within a single building or group of buildings. A LAN consists of servers, a network
operating system, workstations, and a communications link.
LDAP
Lightweight Directory Access Protocol. LDAP is a software protocol that enables people to locate
organizations, individuals, and other resources, such as files and devices in a network, whether
they are on the public Internet or on a corporate intranet. LDAP is a “lightweight” version of
Directory Access Protocol (DAP), which is part of the X.500 standard for directory services in a
network. LDAP is supported within many networking products.
LIM
Line Interface Module.
The LIM is a switch on the front panel of the T3100 primary chassis
that implements the platform’s data plane network, and performs load balancing and routing
for the Application Services Modules (
s). The T3100 primary chassis supports two
LIMs for redundancy. The extension chassis (if present) replaces the LIMs with Shelf
Extension Modules (
s).
MDI
Macara Dynamic Interleaving. A Bytemobile technology that is designed to address the slow speed
of access arising from HTTP operation. MDI technology parallelizes the HTTP process with a
number of techniques, including a first-generation client-server-based technique called MDI-1; and
two second-generation-techniques: client-server-based MDI-2 and clientless Macara Dynamic
Multiparting (
