Glossary
server
In a client/server architecture, this is an application that provides services to other devices, called
clients, running on the same or on a different computer.
session
The series of interactions with a mobile subscriber beginning with authentication of the subscriber
with the network and terminating when the subscriber disengages from the network.
shelf
SIM
Subscriber Identity Module. GSM-enabled phones have a “smart card” inside called the Subscriber
Identity Module (SIM). The SIM card is personalized to a single, unique subscriber. It identifies
the subscriber's account to the network and provides authentication, which allows appropriate
billing.
SGSN
Serving GPRS Support Node. The SGSN keeps track of the location of individual
(MSs) and performs security functions and access control.
SMM
Shelf Management Module.
The SMM provides the connection point between the operator’s
management network and the T3100 platform. A pair of SMMs working in active-standby
mode reside on the front panel of the T3100 chassis. The Active LED on the SMM’s front
panel indicates the active SMM when lit.
SMS
Short Messaging Service. SMS is a text message service that enables short messages, up to 160
characters in length, to be sent and transmitted from a cell phone. SMS was introduced in the GSM
system and later supported by all other digital-based mobile communications systems. Unlike
paging, short messages are stored and forwarded in SMS centers. SMS messages travel to the cell
phone over the system's control channel, which is separate from the voice channel.
SMTP
Simple Mail Transfer Protocol, a TCP/IP protocol for sending e-mail messages between servers.
SMTP defines the message format and the message transfer agent (MTA), which stores and
forwards the mail. SMTP is used to send messages from one e-mail server to another. The
messages can then be retrieved with an e-mail client that uses either
SMTP is generally used to send messages from a mail client to a mail server.
SNMP
Simple Network Management Protocol, a widely-used set of protocols for monitoring and
controlling complex networks running TCP/IP. It is the standard operations and maintenance
protocol for the Internet. SNMP makes it possible to manage a large network remotely by polling
network devices, setting terminal values, and monitoring network events. SNMP works by sending
messages, called protocol data units (PDUs), to different parts of a network. SNMP-compliant
devices, called agents, store data about themselves in Management Information Bases (MIBs) and
return this data to the SNMP requesters.
SSL
Secure Socket Layer. An open, non-proprietary protocol for transmitting private documents
securely over the Internet. SSL uses a private key to encrypt data that is transferred over the SSL
connection. Developed by Netscape, SSL is supported by both Netscape Navigator and Internet
Explorer. Web sites use the protocol to obtain confidential user information, such as credit card
numbers. By convention, Web pages that require an SSL connection start with https: instead of
http:. See

subnet address
The portion of an IP address that is specified as the subnetwork by the subnet mask.
subnet mask
The 32-bit address mask used in IP to indicate the bits of an IP address that are being used for the
subnet address. It is often called just the mask.
