An important factor in the successful installation and administration of the PBXgateway 
and Remote is determining the necessary bandwidth required. Determining the 
appropriate amount of bandwidth is a function of two factors: 

ƒ

  Number of users (telephones) 

ƒ

  Voice compression required for each user 

 

Determining the Number of Users 

The number of users is simply the number of telephones that will be “extended” at the 
remote site. In the case of the Remote there can be one or two users per device. 

 

Determining Voice Compression 

The PBXgateway provides various voice compression methods (CODECs). The method 
chosen will determine the amount of bandwidth required. The total bandwidth required, 
including overhead, depends upon the compression method being used:

The total amount of bandwidth required for the PBXgateway and Remote application can 
be determined by using the 

Bandwidth Management Formula

 on the next page. 

Selecting a Compression Method 

Optimum voice quality is achieved when using the G7.11 voice compression method. 
However, the high voice quality requires the largest amount of bandwidth due to the low 
compression. 

The highest voice compression is achieved using G.729A. With this voice compression 
method the voice quality is considered “near toll” and the bandwidth requirements are 
significantly reduced. 

If conversation quality is a high priority and bandwidth is not a factor then G.711 or 
ADPCM32 would be recommended. If, however, bandwidth is a factor and voice quality is 
not paramount then G.729A or ADPCM24 is recommended.
