Securing lifter to sump.

•

Secure lifter, 

BMW No. 00 1 510

,

 

to sump.

Remove rear wheel

 (

a 

36.8).

Remove rear wheel drive unit

 (

a 

33.7).

–

[Without Integral ABS] 

Remove inductive signal 

transmitter.

–

Remove the rear brake caliper and secure it to 
the frame.

–

Release the retaining strap at the flexible gaiter.

–

Loosen the reaction link at the rear wheel drive.

–

Release locknut on bearing stud, left, 
rear wheel drive to frame.

–

Release bearing studs, left and right, 
rear wheel drive to frame.

–

Detach the reaction link and pull the rear wheel 
drive away from the swinging arm.

L

 Note:

Do not lay oil-filled rear wheel drive on its side before 
installing (keep it in the correct position for installa-
tion), or else oil will escape when the motorcycle is 
ridden (suction effect).

Remove swinging arm 

(

a 

33.21)

 and drive shaft 

(

a 

33.23).

–

Remove circlips from threaded rings at left and 
right.

d

 Warning:

Note that a high loosening torque is needed.

–

Unscrew the lock ring at the left threaded ring.

–

Remove the left/right threaded rings.

–

Loosen the left/right bearing studs.

–

Detach the suspension strut from the swinging 
arm.

–

Release the left/right bearing studs and pull the 
swinging arm away from the gearbox.

–

Press off drive shaft.

Remove cross-tube

 (

a 

46.25).

–

Open the retaining hoop and disconnect the 
gear shift lever.

–

Remove the left footrest assembly.

•

Remove the right footrest assembly and secure 
it to the frame together with the brake pipe and 
the master brake cylinder.

•

Release the cross-tube and take it off with the 
strut.

Disconnecting plugs and cables for engine and 
gearbox.

•

Cut through the cable tie for the clutch bleed line 
at the frame.

e

 Important:

Unscrew the clutch slave cylinder fasteners uni-
formly and in diagonally opposite sequence.

•

Remove the clutch slave cylinder and guide the 
clutch line through upwards.

•

Disconnect the plug for the gear indicator switch 
and guide the cable through downwards.

•

Disconnect the plug for the coolant temperature 
at the cylinder head and guide the cable through 
downwards.

•

Disconnect the plug for the side stand switch 
and guide the cable through downwards.

•

Disconnect the plug for the oxygen sensor and 
guide the cable through downwards.

•

Disconnect the cables from the alternator.

•

Disconnect cable to starter at the connector be-
tween the fuse boxes.

•

Detach the earth (ground) lead from the upper 
cross-tube.

Press the left/right radiator with fan out of the 
holder.

•

Remove the retaining clip with washer.
